Introduction

Herwa Community Development Initiative is a non­- governmental, nonprofit, non-religious, and nonpolitical organization. The organization was formed in 1999 as Friends of the Habitat in response to the low and pervasive literacy level, rising HIV prevalence, malaria, and widespread poverty. However, while registering the Association as a National NGO in the year 2000 the name of the organization was changed to Herwa Community Development Initiative on the advice of the CAC.

The Goal of the Organization
The goal of organization is to secure literate and healthy communities where sustainable livelihoods and good governance thrive.

HECDI envisions a democratic society which is free from violent conflicts, diseases, and empowered youths,

Mission
To significantly reduce health problems like child killer diseases, HIV/AIDS, violent conflicts; ensure free and fair elections, and accountable Government through communication, capacity building, dialogue, sensitization and community mobilization and education

Major Aims

  1. To build peace and prevent violent conflicts.
  2. To build the capacities of women, girls and out of school youths in self-reliance through skill acquisition and establishment of Micro enterprises.
  3. To take pertinent preventive information to rural communities on maternal and new born Health and nutrition, Polio, HIV/STI, Tuberculosis and Malaria prevention.
  4. To raise interest in education among the teaming illiterate population in the North east Nigeria.
